Wilderness Woman No. 1

Wilderness Women is a series of watercolours based on the Bible verse Hosea 2:14. We tend to think of the metaphorical wilderness of the soul as a negative place to be. It’s often where we find ourselves in times of great difficulty and loss. The wilderness can feel lonely, scary, desolate, without provisions or safety. We get lost easily, and feel desperate, angry, and depressed. God feels distant and we wonder where our comforter and guide, the Spirit of the Lord, has gone. But having lived in the wilderness for a while now, I can share this: Once I accepted that I now live in the wilderness and stopped being angry at God for putting me here or trying to find a way out, I chose to accept this new place as home and build my house in the wilderness. After that, I realized how beautiful the wilderness is and how near God was the whole time. My resentment of him because of my situation was what made him feel distant. God calls us into the wilderness to get us away from the noise of the world and speaks to us there in a gentle whisper. This series of paintings explores the spiritual interaction of wilderness women and their spiritual guide and companion in the form of a bird, mirroring the dove that descended upon Christ as the Spirit of the Lord at his baptism.
